It can be a real challenge to plan your career strategically in Germany but especially if you have an international background and are not yet sure if you want to stay on track in Germany’s academic world or are considering other options. The entry routes into the job-market – both academic and nonacademic – are not always transparent, international candidates are often not well-informed about what to expect in the application process, how to articulate their competencies, and how or where to build up a professional network and ensure they are visible. Even if (or especially if) you are unsure of your path, it is better to start planning early! In this workshop, we will start career planning at the most important place – with you! It is important to take time to reflect on what it is you really want to do, what are your core values, what motivates you, when/where do you thrive You’ll be supported in reflecting on and identifying what is right for you, bearing in mind your current life situation, your academic skills and your extra competencies. This workshop offers assistance with your career planning – whether within or outside academia – and will encourage you to prepare for your future in a focused way by creating your own, personal action plan.

Participants will receive a preparatory exercise by email to complete approx. one week before the workshop.

Learning targets:

The participants will...

• develop career-related self-knowledge (what do I bring and where do I want to go with that?).
• practise presenting their profile briefly and convincingly.
• gain valuable insights into the academic system in Germany and identify options available to them.
• identify their competencies and practise articulating these.
• make an individual action-plan to start implementing right away.

International postdoctoral researchers from all disciplines

• When you register as a mandatory participant, please note that attending the training is part of your official duties and an unexcused absence is a violation of your official responsibilities. Any further education undertaken during your working hours is subject to the prior approval of your manager.
