Kursbeschreibung
This course introduces participants to the purposes, possibilities and practical considerations of university laboratory teaching. It will cover overarching aims of practical work as part of degree programmes in natural sciences and specific contexts, including large classes and project work. Recent technological developments, such as generative AI and VR, and their implications for laboratory teaching will also be discussed. The course will focus on mutual learning through facilitated discussions allowing participants' to develop their knowledge and skills through exploring aspects of thier experiences and immediate teaching contexts.
Learning targets:
During the course, participants will acquire the knowledge and understanding that will enable effective laboratory instruction and supervision in a range of university science contexts. In particular, on completing the course, participants should be able to:
- consider the learning opportunities presented by a particular laboratory task and organise the laboratory time for optimal student learning;
- feel confident running laboratory sessions with several groups, and be able to support all students to obtain their best learning possible;
- plan for research/internship supervision, including core responsibilities and the appropriate balance between guidance and independence;
- assess students' work and learning in laboratory contexts and evaluate students appropriately;
- be able to critically evaluate laboratory teaching provision and reflect on possibilities for development.
Target group:
Laboratory teachers and supervisors in natural sciences, mostly PhD students and post-doctoral researchers.

- When you register as a mandatory participant, please note that attending the training is part of your official duties and an unexcused absence is a violation of your official responsibilities. Any further education undertaken during your working hours is subject to the prior approval of your manager.

- Fee: 375,00 €. Free for employees of CAU and PhD students who are registered within the Graduiertenzentrum.
