- Friday, May 22nd, 2026, 08:30 a.m. - 04:00 p.m.
Content:
Working in a scientific community you have already realized the importance of publishing your work. Getting attention is crucial for your vocational success as is building a network and staying ahead in your area of research. To get attention in your field of expertise you can rely on two related skills:
1) writing comprehensive and well-researched articles and
2) giving talks and addressing audiences at international conferences.
The latter is well worth some training, because it is not only important what you say, but how you say it, how the audience responds to you as a person, how you support your content with the right structure and nonverbal behaviour. That is why presentation skills matter - not only for managers, sales agents or politicians, but also for researchers and lecturers.
During the course each participant will perform up to six presentations and receive feedback from trainer, trainees and via video.
The following topics are at the core of the workshop:
- verbal communication and the power of the voice
- nonverbal communication
- effective usage of different media
- simulation of different situations, dealing with stress and stage fright, team presentations and standing in front of a critical audience
Course Preparation:
You'll be giving five presentations during this course. Two of these need some preparation before the course starts: Please prepare one presentation of about 6-8 minutes as a personal introduction and a second presentation about your current research (8-10 minutes). You will be filmed while giving your presentations to discuss your performance. Please bring a 4 GB-USB stick to get the videos afterwards. I will not keep or share any videos after the course.
The participation in this course is accountable for the certificate “Science Communication” of the Graduate Center. Please contact Mirco Bergerhof if you are interested.
